F1 Year To Date Championship
While watching this year’s F1 coverage I noticed a few mentions of “such and such scored the most points over the last 6 races” or “if the season started in Miami”, which got me thinking.
What if we look back at the history of F1 and at every race we go back and tally up the points from a year’s worth of races?
Well, thanks to an excel file that goes all the way to 11, well AQI222, we need wonder no more.
So, as an example, if we look at race 6 of 1960 and add up the points for 10 of the previous races, we’ll find that Bruce Mclaren would have been champion. Unfortunately for him that wasn’t when that season ended, so he never became champion, but this approach shows that he had it in him at least for that one stretch in 1959-1960.
While adding up the scores, quite quickly I came to the slight snag of there being different number of races from season to season. I came up with the following rule which I believe makes intuitive sense, even though I am happy to admit that this isn’t the only possible way of looking at this:
I have applied the total for the current year being looked at. Where this is greater than the number of races of the previous year I went back only as far as the beginning of the previous year (it did not make sense to stretch back over 3 seasons into the year before that). So, for instance in 1969 there were 11 races and in 1970 there were 13. So YTDC calculations for Race 1 of 1970 would include the 11 races of 1969 and Race 1 of 1970 (12 total), Race 2 YTDC would be worked out from the 11 races of 1969 and the 2 of 1970 (13 total). Race 3 YTDC would be from the last 10 races of 1969 and the first 3 of 1970 (13 total), and so on, moving through the remainder of 1969 until we only count 1970 for the last race.
Finally, there were a few instances where two or more drivers had the same number of YTDC points – in that case I went to the usual countback of race wins, seconds, etc and determined the “actual” winner (apologies to Eddie Irvine who lost his one entry on a countback).

Just kidding, I wouldn’t do that to you, am not that cruel. That data is indeed available below, but you can also see the sums of YTD Championships (helpfully labelled as Count of 0), Total GP by driver, their actual WDC Titles and the percentage of YTDC/Total GP. Some of the early high percentages were achieved across careers spanning relatively few races, however we must remember the high rates of fatalities in those days. In fact, one of the standout moments for me, while preparing the table, was seeing Jim Clark pop up again as a YTD Champ at the race weekend following his death.
Don’t think of this as just a way to find which driver was “the best”. I think these stats tell a multitude of fascinating stories and highlight some remarkable achievements.
You have the Dominator that was Juan Manual Fangio, who was YTDC in 78.4% of GP entered.
You have the GOAT Lewis Hamilton on 147, beating Michael Schumacher (123) to the top spot of outright YTDC.
And then you have the biggest surprise for me – Alain Prost. We all know he was very good, but to see him pop up so consistently throughout his career was a revelation. I started watching F1 in the early 90s and picked Ayrton Senna as my favourite driver for no other reason than I liked his name and the look of his McLaren (and he must have been doing alright to be mentioned in the commentary and thus be noticeable to a new F1 viewer). It is a bit galling for me to see how comprehensively Prost outperforms him on this metric. Of course, Senna’s career was cut short, but the numbers tell a story.
Damon Hill was the driver I supported after Senna’s passing (what with him being his teammate in a Williams) and I was pleased to see Damon score 25 in the YTDC rankings, showing him as one of the stronger one-time champions.
We mustn’t forget all the usual caveats – you need the right car, at the right time and place and then there’s the inflation of races per year. That is all true, however YTDC is a way of finding those consistently outstanding performances which might not have been rewarded with an “actual” title.
